If you’re aged 19 or over, have a disability and are living in Gloucestershire, there may be a part-time learning opportunity at National Star that’s just right for you. We guarantee a warm welcome, lots of encouragement and the chance to develop some exciting new skills!
To take part in a course you will need to be accompanied by a carer / support worker. A £30 registration fee will be payable per course and additional fees are required for practical courses, such as Arts and Crafts and Baking.
All courses run for 10 weeks (from w/c 26 September 2022) over three terms with the exception of Exploring Art Techniques, which will run for two terms of 15 weeks.
Music with Jack Bennett – Tuesdays, 5.30pm – 7.30pm, £35
Come and learn about the different instruments used in a band, including how they work and how they are recorded, and get ‘hands on experience’ with the instruments. Before the end of the course you will have the opportunity to perform either individually or with others in the class. You will even receive a video of your performance to take away.
Swimming with Rebecca Campbell, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 12pm – 1pm, £35
Our swim classes are designed to meet individual needs to help improve mobility, fitness, skills and technique, as well as your confidence in the water. The tutor will work with you to set targets and goals whilst you have fun and make new friends. Our heated pool at National Star provides spacious changing rooms with overhead tracking hoists, as well as an excellent range of equipment.
Arts and Crafts with Louise Adams, Wednesdays, 9.45am – 12.15pm, £35 and £15 for materials
This course will initially provide you with basic creative skills in printmaking, painting, mixed media collage and textiles. You will have the opportunity to create a small piece in each medium taught by an experienced art tutor of 21 years. You will then be able to delve a little deeper into one of the processes to create a mini masterpiece that will look fabulous in anyone’s home. Whether you want to unleash your creativity, practise some mindfulness or learn a completely new skill, this course will provide all of that whilst you work in a large, light and airy, purpose-built space with an abundance of materials at your fingertips.
Fitness with Russ Whiting, Wednesdays, 10.30am – 11.30am and 11.45am – 12.45pm, £35
Want to go to the gym but need specialised equipment and a specialist who can support you to develop in strength, stamina and overall fitness? Our fitness classes will be tailored to your individual requirements and will encourage and promote your independence in using specific equipment. Sign up to develop and / or maintain fine and gross motor skills, increase mobility and improve physical fitness.
Art – Exploring Art Techniques with Emily Murphy, Thursdays, 5.30pm – 7.30pm, £52.50 and £20 for materials. Please note that this is a 15-week course
Calling all budding artists! When creativity meets explorative play, we delve into a world of imagination, adventure and discovery. Through the art of messy play and mixed media exploration, the course will take you on a journey to discover and develop skills that will support you throughout the course and beyond into your wider lives. From cognitive collage making to sensory paint pouring, there will be something for all people of all abilities to enjoy. You will have the opportunity to plan, research and develop a series of small projects and showcase your work in a mini exhibition at the end of the course.
Baking with Chloe Hawkins, Thursdays, 5.30pm – 7.30pm, £35 and learners will purchase their ingredients ahead of each class
This course is ideal for anyone who would like to explore the baking world. Each week we will learn how to use everyday ingredients to make delicious treats such as cookies, cakes, bread and scrumptious pizzas. You will be able to put your own flare on your baked goods by having unique fillings and textures. This will give you the knowledge and confidence to bake at home for any occasion.
Cookery with Elaine Jackson, Fridays, 10am – 12.30pm, £35 and learners will purchase their materials ahead of each class
Explore a range of recipes to suit your lifestyle and test out your tastebuds. In a social and friendly environment, you will look at different ways to use a range of seasonal and store cupboard ingredients and understand the impact on your diet. Everyone will be encouraged to make healthy choices when shopping and cooking at home. These sessions are fun and friendly and will enable you to also make better choices when eating out as well as in the kitchen. Over the course, you will build a folder of illustrated recipes to use and share at home.
